On a northern coast, I think of her, who is also w/ family, slightly lower on the coast. “To meditate, to work on some things together, as a family,” she said. Very frank that first call. Both socked in today. Dampness, cypress, redwood water, wet soil, the stuff of organic soap marketing.

I stare at the grey crests below the cliffs across the kitchen dining table.

Re-met just two days prior. I had hoped she’d be there. “I dress for New York, but then I end up at a tiki bar standing in front of an animatronic hula girl. . . . So you broke up with her or her you? Me too. Why are lawyers so into meditation? Where do you live? What is your middle name? Is your mom a feminist? When she took his name, I knew our friendship was over. Do you like to go to the fancy pizza restaurant? I do but I only get drinks there.”

Next day, after a trip to radio shack, I called her. she thanked me, I’m “proactive”… “please let me know if you get back earlier than expected” she had said.

A first date is a meeting: a drink at a place with fancy pizza that is not eaten, a movie (though I’ve never done that), a hike around a mystic lake, coffee and beer (in that order, then you know things are going well), a space pod trip, viewing her in a play with robots, pogo ball, Japanese tea gardens, renegade yoga, a lesbian bar, live music with chap pant lead singer thrusting, eating pie, club dancing and touchy porn videogame, ocean viewing with gazing (best with a beard) … or maybe it’s an excursion on the coast where there are hotsprings, redwood water, dampness, wet soil, still gazes, pauses, laughs, comparing notes/ sniffles, and then sitting in a non denominational mollusk cathedral toasted pine nuts by a space heater???

Or is it the stuff of year ending / beginning marketing?

What if I have internet, though,

and she doesn’t?

Is it too much/too little/hot cold/mollusk/vertebrate?

My dad and I split wood all afternoon. He’s too old now to do the splitting himself, so he stacks what I split. We start with great rounds of trunk piled below the house where the tree fell, and we finish with rows of firewood stacked and drying. When the work is done, the winter light cuts low and flat through the trees. I go for a walk to the spring, and my dad goes to clear brambles from a stone wall he’s fond of in the woods. When I return, I put water on for tea. Outside, my father is showing my mother the work we have done. He points to where the rounds had been, and he leads her along the neat stacks of split wood he has made between trees. He mimes the work with his hands. She surveys the scope of our effort, nods, and pats him on the back. They walk into the trees in the direction of his wall. The kitchen is dark and the tea has steeped when I see them again. They appear arm in arm from among the old shadows of the woods.

You’ve left me again, when all I want is to show my work to you. The rise and fall of the sledge, its cold, sharp ring on the wedge, and the knock of wood settling onto wood. You know me far from here, but I’ll tell you: I’m less hamfisted when I split, and you have not done your work half so well.
